Omaha Hi Lo: General Overview
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complex but popular poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure game, has increased in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha hi-low begins like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A round of wagering ensues in which players can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. One more sequence of wagering happens. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. Another round of wagering ensues and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers must attempt to make the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a few players get confused. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player has to utilize precisely three cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same concept in almost all poker games.
A low hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand takes the entire pot.
Although it seems complicated initially, after a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to get the basic subtleties of the game easily enough. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha hi lo provides an amazing range of betting choices and seeing that you have many players battling for the high, as well as many shooting for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha hi low.
