Omaha Hi Lo: General Summary
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure game, has expanded in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha hi-low begins like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of wagering follows where players can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of wagering happens. Once all the players have either called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. a further round of wagering follows at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants will have to make the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where many entrants get baffled. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must utilize precisely 3 cards on the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same notion in almost all poker games.
The lower hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the high hand wins the whole pot.
Although it seems complex at the start, after a couple of hands you will be able to get the fundamental nuances of play simply enough. Since you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better offers an overwhelming collection of wagering choices and owing to the fact that you have several individuals shooting for the high hand, as well as many trying for the low.
