Howard Lederer lived in a family of five in which he liked participating in different card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming really aggressive in these particular card games as he was playing his dad. After finishing high school, Howard decided to put higher education on hold for a little while and moved to New York to participate in some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s first two years were rough as he would play extensive hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He made some additional cash by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he possibly could improve his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He made an attempt to acquire more sleep and focus even more on the game.
The real advancement in his skills began when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would often challenge each other. He was able to access a few of the best minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard would sharpen his logical thinking techniques. He applied these strategy concepts to the game of No-Limit hold’em.
He also assisted his sibling Annie Duke master poker. Annie was an excellent student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the correct choice. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to head out to Sin City and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie is one of the strongest female players the poker world ever. Howard headed to Vegas in 1993 and participated in money games for the next decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
